Industrial Protest and the Law

Filed under: Uncategorized — tucourses @ 12:25 pm

A History of British Trade Unionism

This introductory course will examine the state’s legal response to trade unions and the struggles of working people from 1750 to the present day, placing industrial protest and the changing law in their economic, social and political context.

The course will look at early attempts to form trade unions during the period of illegality from the 18th century to the early 19th century, the formation of mass unions from the end of 19th century, and the use of the courts by employers to frustrate industrial action. It will also survey the changing fortunes of the trade union movement during the 20th century, when from the 1960s an apparent ‘right’ to strike was challenged by successive governments, resulting in the current legal restrictions introduced in the 1980s and 1990s.

Our first open evening

Filed under: Uncategorized — tucourses @ 2:32 pm

This month we had our first open evening to celebrate our move into our new learning centre.  We had reps, officers and colleagues come along to see what we do and how the WEA can work with unions to build up the rep base and deliver learning in workplaces.  On of my personal highlights was a mini activity that we had in Clerkenwell, our main trade union teaching room, where we asked attendees to say how we can help them.  It gave me a lot of ideas!  We’re hoping to turn this into a regular event, as it was great to see members from different unions sharing ideas, giving advice and looking at ways to work together.

Since the evening, we’ve had unions approach us to deliver a variety of courses, from IT to Employment Law and we’re excited to be able to help working people in the best way we can.
